This excellent little museum within Cardiff's beautiful Yr Hen Lyfrgell (The Old Library) building uses interactive displays, free audio guides, video footage and everyday objects to tell the story of the city's transformation from small market town into the world’s biggest coal port and then into the Welsh capital city. Be sure to check out the "tiled corridor," the library's original entrance, lined with gorgeous Victorian tiles.
There is a small gift shop and, downstairs, the City Lab, with kids' activities and exhibits on the history of protest in Cardiff, as well as Welsh-language lessons. There's also a left-luggage desk (each piece £5 to £10 per day).
