A mecca of modern art, Museum Ludwig (museum-ludwig.de; adult/concession/under 18 €12/8/free) presents a tantalizing mix of works from all major genres. In light-filled galleries you can binge on Picasso, pop art, Pollock and photography, or linger over German expressionists and the Russian avant-garde.

Fans of German expressionism (Beckmann, Dix, Kirchner) will get their fill here as much as those with a penchant for Picasso, American pop art (Warhol, Lichtenstein) and Russian avant-garde painter Alexander Rodchenko. Rothko and Pollock are highlights of the abstract collection, while Gursky and Tillmanns are among the reasons the photography section is a must-see.
