Mt Kirigalpotta(2395m) is a moderately strenuous 11km return hike that begins from Farr Inn and takes around five hours, passing through a landscape of high grasses, twisted dwarf forests festooned with lichen and squelchy bogs. After a steep final section, you're rewarded with expansive views of the lowlands. Since the trail is indistinct, a guide is essential: Lalith Rathnayake (+94 77 770 1288), Nimal Herath (+94 77 618 9842) and Kaneel Rajanayeka (+94 77 215 9583) charge around Rs15,000, including transport from Nuwara Eliya. More straightforward is the two-hour 6km return hike up Mt Thotupolakanda (2357m); the trailhead is near the Pattipola park entrance.
