Malmöites are known for their focus on creativity – there are large numbers of technology startups and design studios here, as well as gallery spaces focusing on local and international contemporary art. The most impressive of these galleries is undoubtedly the Moderna Museet Malmö (modernamuseet.se), a local branch of Sweden’s leading museum for contemporary art.
Occupying a handsome 1901 power station designed by John Smedberg, a devotee of the Art Nouveau style, this purpose-designed gallery has a contemporary addition that sits within the original turbine shell. Since opening in 2009, the museum has hosted a high-profile program of temporary exhibitions that feature modern and contemporary work by Swedish and international artists. These exhibitions, the free entry and the pleasant foyer cafe make it arguably the city’s number-one cultural attraction.
