Kuranda is a very popular Cairns day trip, not least because half the fun is getting here. Choose between the 19th-century scenic railway (with 55 bridges, 15 hand-carved tunnels and a jaw-dropping view of Barron Falls) or soaring above the rainforest on one of the world’s longest gondola cableways. Combine the two or drive the winding curves to the village in the rainforest.
Soar over the Rainforest
Glide silently above a sea of green on the 7.5km Skyrail Rainforest Cableway linking Cairns and Kuranda. Allow around 90 minutes one way from Smithfield Terminal (15 minutes' drive from Cairns). The six-seat gondola rises to Red Peak (545m), where a short boardwalk and ranger talks reveal the forest’s ancient heart. From here, it sweeps to Barron Falls Station (340m) and the Edge Lookout – a glass-floored perch above the roaring falls – before descending to Kuranda.
Take the Historic Train
Opened in 1891 after four tough years of construction, the Kuranda Scenic Railway is now one of Queensland’s great day trips. The heritage train climbs slowly from Cairns through tunnels and across bridges, with dizzying glimpses of Barron Gorge below. Depart Cairns Central at 8.30am or 9.30am, returning from Kuranda at 2pm or 3.30pm. Combine the train and Skyrail for the full loop.
Wander the Town & Markets
Kuranda’s rainforest village hums with cafes, galleries and wildlife attractions like Birdworld, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and Kuranda Koala Gardens. The Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets (open 10am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday) remain its bohemian heart, alive with local artists, buskers and handmade treasures.
