It took an alliance of squatters and conservationists to save this grand, twin-towered 1840s hospital from demolition in the early 1970s. Rebooted as an intercultural hub of indie art and culture, it's home to some two dozen institutions from across the creative spectrum – from theater to dance, music to visual arts. A key player is the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien gallery, whose exhibits reflect the center's activist and socially conscious bent.
Also on the premises is the original pharmacy where poet Theodor Fontane worked in 1848–49. It is open from 2pm to 5pm on Tuesday but can be easily appreciated through the glass door (ground floor, turn right).
