This small museum presents postwar modernist works created in West and East Germany, especially between the end of WWII in 1945 and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. While western artists embraced abstraction during these early Cold War years, social realism emerged as the guiding principle in the east. Housed in the monumental studio of Third Reich–era sculptor Arno Breker, themed short- and longterm exhibits, mostly of sculpture, zero in on this often overlooked period in art history.
There's a lovely museum cafe with a terrace where you can indulge in coffee and cake or a light meal.
Combination tickets with the nearby Brücke-Museum (of German expressionist art) are available.
