Kulturhuset

An architecturally divisive building, opened in 1974, the Kulturhuset is a seven-story wall of glass forming the south side of Sergels Torg where Stockholmers meet to hang out and experience arts and culture. It would take an incredible amount of space to summarize what is on offer in this large complex but the short version is: if it's cultural you will probably find it here. You could catch a play in one of the the various-sized theater venues of Stadsteatern, see a film, or wander into any of the art galleries, find a space to play chess or use one of the three libraries, including one with a fine selection of graphic novels in many languages. There's even a library specially dedicated to young children so if you want your young ones to get a taste of what their peers in Sweden are reading, this is a great place for that. Even if none of that appeals, drop by to have a meal or coffee in Theaterbaren, in its buzzing main cafe/bar or the rooftop Panorama. They both have great views over Sergels Torg, particularly at night when the fountain studded with a 37.5m glass obelisk by Edvin Öhrström glows in vivid colors. The Stockholm Visitor Center is also here, on the lower level.
