Kon-Tiki Museum

A favorite with children, this museum is dedicated to the balsawood raft Kon-Tiki, which Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl used to sail from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. He sought to test his hypothesis that the islands of the South Pacific could originally have been populated by peoples from South America. The museum also displays the papyrus-reed boat Ra II, built by Aymara people from Lake Titicaca. In 1970 Heyerdahl used it to cross the Atlantic, launching from Morocco.
