Knuthenborg Safari Park (knuthenborg.dk, adult/child 279/189kr) is northern Europe’s biggest safari park and one of Denmark’s top attractions. Residents, which include four elephants and Keni the 300kg Siberian tiger, are generally "retired" here into sprawling enclosures after performance careers in circuses. In 2023, three lions arrived, evacuated from a zoo in war-torn Ukraine.
One of the park’s main draws, the savanna area (car only) has rhinos, zebras, camels, moose and many more free-roamers. Don't miss the theme park with its fiendishly steep log-flume, or the Dinosaur-skoven, a fabulous woodland full of dinos that actually move and roar. A fun way for families to experience Knuthenborg is to sleep in one of the "camp" apartments that back onto wildlife enclosures. You might have wolves howling behind your window and buffalo wandering about outside your door.
Entry is usually via Gate 1, around 6km north of Maribo via Maglemer. From the E47 highway take exit 47 (southbound) or 48 (northbound) and follow the signs to Knuthenborg. You exit at Gate 2 and return to Maribo via Rte 289.
