For more than a century, Quincy Quarries provided the granite for notable landmarks like , the Bunker Hill Monument and other sites further afield. One of the nation's first railway lines, the so-called Granite Railway was built in the 1820s to transport the granite from the quarry to a dock on the Neponset River.
