Some 1km via a squiggle of lanes south of the B380 is the enigmatic former monastery of Kantarodai – two dozen or so dagobas, 1m to 2m in height, in a palm-fringed field. A flourishing Buddhist monastery existed here during the Anuradhapura and Polunnaruwa periods. The original 60 stupas commemorated 60 monks who are siad to have died here of food poisoning.
