Nine kilometres inland, Korea's year-round Jang Bogo Base opened in 2014 and houses 62 people at its summer peak. It's named after a historic Korean mariner and was planned with zero waste discharge in both its building phase and its operating phase. Scientists here study everything from meteorites to climate change.
