The natural highlight of Sai Kung is the UNESCO-listed Hong Kong Global Geopark, which spans 50 sq km and comprises two distinct geological regions with spectacular rock formations: namely, volcanic rock from 140 million years ago that often appears as stacks of visually stunning hexagonal columns, and sedimentary rock from 400 million years ago comprising uniquely shaped sandstone and siltstone.
Even if you're not into a rocks, a hike or a boat tour into the geopark is a rewarding and relaxing day out. With two 90-minute walking routes, the High Island Reservoir East Dam is the most easily accessible part of Hong Kong Global Geopark and the only place where you can touch the hexagonal rock columns. The boat tours from the Volcano Discovery Centre in Sai Kung are the best way to get the most out of the geopark, but be sure book well in advance.
