Gunung Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, presides over the entire Yogyakarta region. It holds a special place in the hearts and lives of the local populace of Yogyakarta and the Javanese people; it is prominent in Javanese myths and legends (it was said to be the home of the gods, and that the volcano was cut from the mythical Mount Meru), and cultural and spiritual connections to Merapi run deep. The Kraton, the royal palace and home of Yogyakarta’s sultan, was built to face Gunung Merapi. There are many restaurants, cafes and attractions built around the volcano’s lower slopes, and weekends see crowds flocking from the city to enjoy the incredible views.
