Just a few days after construction began on the Berlin Wall in August 1961, 24-year-old Günter Litfin became the first victim of the East German border guards' shoot-to-kill order as he tried to escape by swimming across the 40m-wide Humboldt Harbour near today's main train station. This small exhibit in an old border watchtower, now cradled by new residential buildings, keeps his legacy alive.
A memorial stone near the station marks the spot where Litfin actually died.
