Views of and from Najac's iconic fortress are more impressive than the ruins themselves, but the crenellated round tower has been restored so you can climb for superb panoramas.
Look for the secret passage leading out of St Julian’s Chapel, the dungeon which imprisoned Knights Templar, and symbols carved into the walls by stonemasons. Check out the extended loopholes that allowed two archers to fire at once adding to location in making the site practically unassailable in medieval battles. Access is via a steep footpath, no roads.
