Explore Sagres' fortress promontory.
Approaching the formidable, reconstructed, walkable ramparts of Fortaleza de Sagres (promontoriodesagres.pt), one imagines a robust defense system beyond. In reality, it's a barren headland hosting some 15th-century structures that survived the 1755 tsunami.
Thankfully, an interactive Age of Discovery exhibition center opened in 2023, providing historical context via nautical charts and presentations on the fortress, caravels and trade routes. Outside, there's a sealed 16th-century chapel, cistern tower and a remarkable, overgrown, 43m-wide floor-level stone compass. Trails (some accessible) and information boards spread across the weathered promontory towards cliff-perched fishers and the maze-like A Voz do Mar installation, echoing the waves below.
