Entrance to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Opened in time for Vancouver's Expo '86, Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden (vancouverchinesegarden.com; adult/child $16/12) was the first Chinese "scholars' garden" (created for scholars and poets as a peaceful retreat for reflection, study and inspiration) to be built outside Asia, and is one of the city's most-beloved ornamental green spaces. Surrounded by tile-topped walls and centered on a mirror-calm pond fringed by twisting trees, its covered walkways offer a tranquil respite from clamorous Chinatown.

The intimate "garden of ease" reflects Taoist principles of balance and harmony. Entry at this delightful oasis includes an optional 45-minute guided tour, typically starting on the hour, where you'll learn about the symbolism behind the placement of the gnarled pine trees, winding covered pathways and ancient limestone formations. Look out for the colorful carp and lazy turtles in the water, and conclude your visit with a complimentary cup of traditional tea.

The adjacent Dr Sun Yat-Sen Park isn't quite as elaborate as its sister, but this free-entry spot is also a pleasant oasis with whispering grasses, a large fishpond and a small pagoda. Check the website for events including special exhibitions and summertime evening concerts.
