Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Enfolded in a wooded estate, this is the only known Roman gold mine in the UK. The main attraction is the chance to go underground on a guided tour of the old mine workings, although the exhibition and the mining machinery above ground, where you can try panning for gold, are interesting. The mines were closed at the time of research.

The Romans left around 120 CE, but locals carried on for another two centuries. Mining recommenced with the Victorians, stopping for good in 1938. There's also a tearoom and short walking trails here.
