Though not in the same league as its Cape Town cousin, Crickhowell has its very own Table Mountain, 451m Crug Hywel. Rising to the north, the distinctive hump of old red sandstone gave the town its name. The short-but-steep hike to the top is a rite of passage for local ramblers, heading through a wooded dingle and over stile and field to the remains of an Iron Age hill fort. The summit commands tremendous views of the Brecons and Black Mountains.
The tourist office has a leaflet detailing the 4.5-mile, three-hour round-trip route.
