Citadelle

For a bird's-eye view of Corte, haul your way up to the Citadelle (closed Mon), which occupies a stark rocky crag above the valley. The citadel itself was built in 1419, while the two buildings facing one another past the gate, the Caserne Padoue (Padoue Barracks) and Caserne Serrurier (Serrurier Barracks), were added in the 19th century. The latter houses the Musée de la Corse (musee-corse.com; adult/child incl citadel €5.50/3; closed Mon), the island’s principal museum of Corsican history and anthropology; well worth a visit if you want to get the low-down on Corsica's past and culture (add an extra €2 for the English audioguide). To reach the upper level of the Citadelle (and enjoy the views), you have to pass through the museum. To sample just as prodigious a panorama for free, follow signs to the Belvédère, a free-access viewing platform.
