In 1929 the Anglo-American writer Christopher Isherwood moved to this pretty residential building from London, to escape the sexual oppression in England and to live out his homosexual fantasies. His experiences and impressions of the late Weimar years form the basis of two novellas known as the Berlin Stories, which were later turned into the musical and movie Cabaret, starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles.
