The Buenos Aires Museo (@buenosairesmuseo; entry free on Wed; 11am-7pm Mon, Wed-Fri, 11am-8pm Sat & Sun) has an ambitious goal: to tell the city's history from its beginnings to the present day. Through interactive elements, its permanent exhibition tells the story of the significant transformations of the city and how Buenos Aires became cosmopolitan. There are exhibits on the first settlers, the houses and historical and cultural landmarks of the city and a space dedicated to the role played by radio, television and sports (particularly soccer) in the lives of porteños. A highlight is its photographic archive of over 8000 images of the city and its inhabitants, plus about 35,000 negatives from collections of renowned photographers.
The museum is located in an old mansion with two floors and rooms that converge in a central courtyard. Go up to the second floor, where there is a terrace with a good view of the Basilica San Francisco de Asis and the old Farmacia de la Estrella.
