This huge gate was used by the Russians as the public execution spot for political prisoners in the late 19th century. In 1933, over a 100 stone crosses and several Jewish matzevot (tomb stones) were erected here in memory of those who had perished.

It is the eastern entrance to the Warsaw Citadel.
