The stretch of golden sand at Borth, 7 miles north of Aberystwyth, is Ceredigion's longest beach. Low tides expose the gnarled stumps of a prehistoric forest, swallowed by the waves 4500 years ago, linked in local lore to the "drowned kingdom" of Cantre’r Gwaelod. Cross to the beach opposite Borth train station and trace it either south along the town beach or, better, three miles north to lovely Ynyslas Dunes, one of West Wales' most extensive sand dune systems.
Ynyslas Visitor Centre is tucked amid the sandy mounds here, which are part of the 2000-hectare Dyfi National Nature Reserve.
