Your Amazon expedition begins today, as you’ll check out of your Quito hotel to soar over the eastern cordillera, where jagged peaks melt into an endless sea of emerald green. After breakfast, meet your driver for your transfer to the airport and board the short flight to Puerto Francisco de Orellana. Upon landing, your day of trains, planes, and automobiles isn’t finished quite yet, as you’ll board a motorized canoe to zig-zag your way through the water, en route to your jungle getaway in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve. As the engine cuts, listen to the rhythmic pulse of the jungle, the roar of howler monkeys, and the screech of macaws. Check in to your lodge room and get your binoculars ready. This evening, you'll acclimate yourself to your new and mysterious national park surroundings — your home for the next few days and the innumerable adventures still to come. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
There’s no jungle like the Amazon — an extreme ecosystem of unmatched biodiversity. Both the world's largest and most dense rainforest, the Amazon houses hundreds and hundreds of forms of flora and fauna, including some 800 species of fish, 350 reptiles, and 300 mammals. It’s birds, however, that truly color in this magnificent landscape; more than 1,600 bird species have been recorded here, filling the land and sky with life.
For your first night in the Amazon — and every night you’re here — you’ll sleep between the trees of this sprawling nature reserve. You’re in the Amazon to actually, truly, be IN the Amazon, and this lodge makes good on that promise. From your room, listen closely as monkeys call out to one another. Then, keep your eyes peeled for sloths as you walk to dinner. As you’ll discover this afternoon, the lodge simultaneously keeps you comfortable while pushing you out of your comfort zone — the best balance in the rainforest.
Surrounded by a rainforest filled with monkeys, manatees, sloths, and birds, this eco-lodge consists of 10 thatched-roof cabins and four larger family cabins. Owned and operated by an Indigenous community, the lodge uses solar-powered electricity and also includes a camping area. Chefs at the on-site restaurant prepare both international and Ecuadorian cuisine using local ingredients, while additional lodge perks include hammocks, binoculars, books, and games available to all guests.
