During WWII, thousands of American servicemen trained at Slapton Sands for D-Day. On one rehearsal in 1944, named Exercise Tiger, a German torpedo boat sank several tank landing vessels, with 639 American soldiers and sailors killed. In 1984, a Sherman tank was recovered from the bay by local man Ken Small and today stands as a memorial near the entrance to Torcross village.
