East London Airport is 10km southeast of the centre.

SA Express, FlySafair and Kulula fly daily to Jo’burg (from R650, 1½ hours). SA Express and FlySafair also serve Cape Town (from R1200, two hours) and Durban (from R1160, one hour) daily.

All the major bus lines serve the central bus station, near Eastern Beach.

Greyhound, Translux, Intercape and City to City offer daily services to Mthatha (from R300, three hours), Port Elizabeth (from R450, 4½ hours), Durban (from R420, 9½ hours), Cape Town (from R550, 16 hours) and Jo’burg (from R450, 16 hours).

Shared Taxi

Shared taxis leave from Oxford St and the surrounding streets. On the corner of Buffalo and College Sts (near East London Zoo) are long-distance taxis to destinations north of East London, including Mthatha (R135, four hours).


On Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, Shosholoza Meyl runs a tourist-class (with sleepers) train both to and from Jo’burg (R490, 20 hours) via Bloemfontein (R310, 13 hours).
