Wild Ass Sanctuary

A portion of parched land within the Little Rann is home to the 4953-sq-km Wild Ass Sanctuary (entry ₹1200-1500), where wildlife-spotting opportunities include some 3000 or so Indian wild khurs (asses), wolves, caracals, blackbuck and chinkara (gazelle). From October to March, a bird population of up to 350 species swarms the sanctuary as well – it is one of the few areas in India where flamingos breed in the wild. You can get visitors' permits at the gates (or ask your resort to organize it). 4WD safaris with up to six passengers (including vehicle permit and guide) depart from 6am and cost between ₹3500 and ₹4200, depending on the day of the week. The sanctuary is best reached by private vehicle en-route to/from Bhuj; it is a 193km drive east of the city (four hours).
