New Mexico's highest summit, Wheeler Peak (13,161ft), is a popular destination in summer. The Williams Lake Trail offers the shortest route (about 7 miles round-trip), though be prepared for a steep ascent. To get here, head to the Taos Ski Valley, pass the parking lot and continue up Twining Rd for about 2 miles. Park before the Bavarian restaurant.
In winter you can snowshoe up to Williams Lake (4 miles round-trip).
