Volcán Batea Mahuida stands outside Villa Pehuenia at 1967m and is managed by the Puel Mapuche. From its summit, you see the eight volcanoes straddling the border of Argentina and Chile – from Lanín in the south to Copahue in the north. In winter, Batea Mahuida Parque de Nieve operates a small number of ski runs on the volcano.
Hike by the Crater Lake
Most people venture to Batea Mahuida to trek the out-and-back summit trail, about two hours of moderate hiking. To reach the trailhead, drive to the crater lake. You can do the short hike to just above the lake (about 20 minutes) or continue to the antenna lookout from which you’ll get a 360-degree view of the surrounding volcanoes. Alternatively, if you have a 4WD vehicle, you can drive to the summit via the shortcut off the main road.
Winter Sports
Open from the beginning of July to mid-August, the indigenous-run ski resort has nine runs, ski and snowboarding lessons and equipment rental (note that the lesson prices don't include equipment rental). Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are available, plus a sledding run for kids. Snowmobile excursions can also be booked.
Take in the Ancient Nature
The drive to Batea Mahuida from Villa Pehuenia is rife with towering "monkey puzzle" trees and the stunning blue expanses of Lago Aluminé and Lago Moquehue, causing you to do double-takes to stare at the surrounding beauty. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the volcano’s crater lake; its waters are a bit chilly for swimming.
