The Varousi quarter, just east of the fortress, was home to Trikala’s wealthiest Christians under Ottoman rule. Their fine old mansions, sporting overhanging balconies, still pepper the tangle of narrow streets. At the corner of Anagiron and Virvou, peek at the fine murals within the 16th-century church of Agioi Anargiri.
