Tsunami Honganji Vihara

On the east side of the hwy north of Hikkaduwa, this tall standing Buddha faces the waves with his hands in the abhaya mudra (Buddha pose conveying fearlessness and protection). Commemorating the victims of the 2004 tsunami, the statue is a replica of Afghanistan's Bamiyan Buddha, which was destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
