The first LGBTIQ+ uprising in the US was SF's 1966 Compton's Cafeteria Riot, when transwomen fought back against police harassment at the corner of Turk and Taylor. Today the street corner is the focal point of the community's annual Riot Party and the world's first official transgender district. Compton's Transgender District commemorates LGBTIQ+ historical sites and supports nonprofits, businesses and nightlife venues that center and celebrate the trans community.
Boundaries include Market St between Taylor St and Jones St, to the south side of Ellis St between Mason St and Taylor St, and the north side of Ellis St between Taylor St and Jones St, as well as the 6th St corridor between Market St and Howard St.
