Tergar Monastery

A little out of center, the Tergar Monastery is its own mini-township of Tibetan monks centered on a veritable fortress of a central temple that's all abuzz with chanting in early mornings. It's the seat of the Kagyu school's disputed candidate for 17th Karmapa. The Karmapa himself is often in residence here and gives teachings in the compound next door. There's a small café on-site.

The monastery's abbot is world-renowned writer-teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, author of The Joy of Living, aligning the power of meditation with understandings of 21st-century science. There are now Tergar study groups all around the world.
