A morning spent browsing and snacking at St George's Market is the perfect way to sample local produce and shop for artisan crafts and souvenirs. The covered market is housed in a beautiful Victorian-era building with sandstone porticos and a glazed roof, with live music and different combinations of local food, drink, antiques and craft stalls each day.
Different Markets
Friday's variety market includes plenty of fresh fish and shellfish from Kilkeel and Portavogie in County Down, as well as locally grown fruit and vegetables, clothes, books and antiques. Saturday's food and craft market has more stalls selling prepared dishes like tapas, curries and vegan pastries, as well as artisan goods such as hand-poured candles and jewelry. Sunday's craft and antiques market has a mix of stalls from the Friday and Saturday markets. Many of the same stalls are open on all three days.
Vendors
The vendors are mostly the craftspeople, bakers, fishers and farmers who have grown, caught or created what they are selling, and they are happy to chat about their wares. Look out for mushrooms from Sporeshore, Irish cheeses from Tom & Ally's, and traditional sweets like rock, honeycomb and nougat from Aunt Sandra's Candy Factory. The egg, bacon and sausage-filled soda farls at the Belfast Bap Co are a popular hangover cure. Wash it all down with a flat white from Drop Hopper Coffee.
Market Building
The building's glass roof is supported by 70 cast iron pillars. Don't miss the fish market clock, which dates from the 1820s.
