Tucked beneath a headland on the eastern edge of Okahu Bay is one of Auckland's most innovative attractions. Constructed in a subterranean labyrinth of massive pipes that was once part of Auckland's stormwater system, Sea Life Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium (kellytarltons.co.nz) is an educational and entertaining place to observe a whole bunch of unexpected residents of the country's biggest city.
The unique aquarium is named after Kelly Tarlton (1937–85), a NZ marine adventurer and entrepreneur who had the singular vision of building the attraction amid the framework of the city's stormwater infrastructure. In line with his vision, and aided by innovative designs from Auckland marine engineer Mike Murphy, visitors to Kelly Tarlton's now walk through transparent tunnels as sharks, stingrays, turtles and other underwater denizens swim and surge around them. Following the ground-breaking innovation of this first development, similar walk-through aquaria were developed by the Kiwi engineer in countries as diverse as Malta, Malaysia and the Maldives.
It's a topsy-turvy underwater world that brings visitors eye-to-eye with many marine species. There's a strong focus on education and conservation, and different interactive zones showcase natural habitats, including the Hauraki Gulf and Antarctica.
