The Costa Vicentina's primary draw for hikers is the Rota Vicentina, two 13-day trails traversing the Algarve and Alentejo sections of the Natural Park. But you don't need to pack an overnight bag for a get-away-from-it-all adventure, thanks to the additional shorter and circular trails, both coastal and inland, and the two "big ones" easily breaking down into day hikes.
Rota Vicentina’s Two Multi-Day Hikes
The Algarve’s side of the mostly coast-hugging Fisherman's Trail (227km) has eight one-day sections between Odeceixe and Lagos. All excellent day hikes, the final leg between Luz and Lagos is the easiest intensity and public transport-wise. The moderate Aljezur to Arrifana (17km) trail, via Monte Clérigo Beach and Ribat da Atalaia’s ruined Islamic fortress, also impresses and has weekday bus connections.
The inland Historic Way (263km) contains five Algarvian sections, concluding in Sagres. Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo (21.4km) is a long, reasonably leisurely walk, crossing oaks, pines, meadows and the restored whitewashed village of Pedralva. For community-focused rambles, check for "maintenance days" when volunteers join locals managing trail upkeep.
The One-Day Culture-to-Coast Walk
The roughly 11km circular Pontal da Carrapateira Trail (pontaldacarrapateira.com), starting at Museu do Mar e da Terra da Carrapateira (closed weekends), is an informatively signed, almost open-air museum. The route includes dune-backed Bordeira, Islamic fishing village ruins, glimpses of Zimbreirinha's working fishermen and compelling coastal views on a low-intensity clifftop hike or bike-friendly dirt road.
Animal Accompanied Rural Rambles
