Stretching along the rim from the South Kaibab Trailhead 13 miles west to Hermits Rest, the paved and dirt Rim Trail connects museums, historic buildings, hotels and some of the South Rim's most spectacular overlooks. West and east of Grand Canyon Village, the trail dips in and out of scrubby pines, and it's easy to find a quiet spot.
The westernmost 2.8-mile Greenway Trail stretch from Monument Creek Vista to Hermits Rest accommodates bicycles and visitors in wheelchairs, and the Trail of Time overlaps the Rim Trail just west of Yavapai Point and Geology Museum. Here, every meter of the trail represents one million years of geologic history, with exhibits providing the details.
Seventeen shuttle stops sit at or near the trail, so it is easy to walk however long you'd like, and then catch a shuttle back; alternatively, park at El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Verkamp's, Yavapai Geology Museum, Pipe Creek Vista or any of the massive lots at the Visitor Center Complex. From December 1 to February 28, you can park at Hermit Rd overlooks (weather permitting).
There are no water-filling stations along the roughly 8-mile section west from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest: be sure to fill up at the parking lot by Bright Angel Trail.
