The most visually stunning of Priego's churches, the Parroquia de la Asunción represents a high point in Andalucian baroque. The church was originally built to a Gothic-Mudéjar style in the 16th century but a comprehensive 18th-century makeover transformed it into a baroque tour de force. Its great masterpiece is the Sagrario (Sacristy), a soaring octagonal chamber where whirls of frothy white stucco surge upwards to a luminous cupola – all the work of local artist Francisco Javier Pedrajas in the 1780s.
For further lavish church ornamentation, head to the Iglesia de la Aurora and Iglesia de San Francisco, both of which also feature 18th-century baroque decor.
