Land and sea creatures, ancient mangroves and breathtaking flora await at Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, which encompasses the Tamarindo Estuary, Playa Langosta, Playa Grande and Playa Ventanas. Spot leatherback turtles, tiny howler monkeys and fabulous tropical birds and reptiles on a guided tour or by taking the boat from Playa Tamarindo.

Mangroves & Ancient Forest

The Tamarindo Estuary is an incredible place to see the park's colossal black and red mangroves with serpentine root systems dipping deep into the waters. These trees are an essential piece of the ecosystem, and you can gently take a boat between them. You'll also find deciduous and semi-deciduous dry forest flora, including black olive, carao and laurel trees, for a total of 117 unique tree species in the park.

Impressive Wildlife

The park teems with animals, including crocodiles, boa constrictors, reptiles and howler monkeys. If you want to check out the entire pantheon of amazing critters, take a joint land and water tour and keep your eyes peeled for fish and reptiles among the mangroves and tiny, loud howler monkeys lurking in the trees. Howler monkeys are tricky to spot, but a good guide can tell you exactly where to look.

Leatherback Turtles

The baula for which the park is named is the mighty and magnificent leatherback turtle that nests on the beaches near these waters, specifically on Playa Langosta, Playa Grande and Playa Ventanas. Sea turtles' numbers are dwindling rapidly, putting the creatures at risk of extinction, so it's even more critical to ensure that they have safe beaches to lay their eggs on.
