Spanning the Colorado River just south of I-40, some 14 miles south of Needles, the arched Old Trails Bridge welcomes the Mother Road to California under endless blue skies. Completed in 1916, the elegant steel arch remained open to car traffic until 1948. For the best vantage point, point your GPS to the Route 66 Welcome Sign off the National Trails Hwy about a quarter mile south of I-40 (exit 153).
Fans of classic movies might recognize the bridge from the film version of John Steinbeck’s novel Grapes of Wrath.
