Old Monterey Jail

Featured in John Steinbeck’s novel Tortilla Flat, this small granite prison (free) was built in 1856. Over a century of use, not one prisoner ever escaped. The thick-walled temporary home of numerous Gold Rush–era gangsters and vigilantes, it's open 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday.
