In 1896 a 13km-narrow-gauge (60cm) railway line was completed from Volos to Ano Lehonia. By 1903 it had reached Milies, bringing the village new prosperity. Services ended in 1971, but were revived as a tourist attraction in 1997. Although To Trenaki now uses a diesel engine rather than steam, it’s still affectionately known as "Moudzouris" ("the smudger").
Daily in August (less frequently otherwise), four-carriage trains sets off from Ano Lehonia, on the lower Pelion slopes 12km east of Volos, at 10am. They take 95 minutes to reach Milies, with a short stop at Ano Gatzea. The return trip leaves Milies at 3pm, allowing time to stroll around the village and have lunch. Check schedules and departure times, which change annually.
