Every great modern city worthy of the title has an observation deck atop a tower, and Melbourne's inhabits the 88th floor of the 297m-high Eureka Tower. As you'd expect, the views from Melbourne Skydeck (melbourneskydeck.com.au; adult/child from $33/21) are beyond incredible, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the languid Yarra River winding through the suburbs and city before emptying into Port Phillip. You'll need at least 30 minutes to take it all in.
The viewing floor is mainly enclosed, but a small corner of exposed deck gives you the opportunity to feel the force of the wind. Daredevils can pay $18 extra to enter the Edge, a glass cube that extends over the side of the building. You can also add on a virtual-reality experience, presenting a cinematic journey through Victoria's main sights.
Tickets are cheaper if bought online and in advance. The Skydeck doesn't open until midday but stays open until 9pm (10pm in summer).
