This outstanding coastal hike runs for 3½ miles each way between Shipwreck Beach and Haʻula Beach. If you're setting off from Shipwreck Beach, park in the Grand Hyatt lot at the end of Ainako St, then head east through the ironwood trees.
Windblown and mostly deserted, the trail offers tremendous variety: stark cliffs, pounding seas, secluded bays and beaches, heiau ruins, tide pools and more, with an optional side trip to Makauwahi Cave. To shorten the hike, start from Mahaʻulepu Beach, which is accessible by road, or simply turn back at any time.
