Back when Khujand was called Leninabad, it received an oversized Lenin statue, 22m-tall with the plinth. In 2011 Vlad was quietly removed from his central plinth north of the river to be replaced by an equally large Somoni. Lenin was salvaged, however, and now stands in the slightly overgrown Victory (Pobedy) Park which also features monuments to those who died in the Afghanistan conflict (1979-89) and at the Chernobyl disaster (1986). Most minibuses with destination "8-12" pass by, and the cross-river cable car gets you fairly close.
