Kali Kovil

This superbly-painted temple with its remarkable gopuram (gateway towers) features a riot of colored plasterwork, but it's not so much the plump deities that attract the eye as the delightful details that are wedged in between: hands of bright yellow bananas, the smiling lion with his woolly mane, a peacock proudly wearing a medal, a lavish bow resting on big pot belly – all signs of the artists' sense of humour.

Devotees pour in and out of the inner sanctum at all times of the day, pausing at the entrance to waft purifying incense and dash coconuts as an offering before prayers.
