The more attractive and abstract of the two statues of former general and prime minister (1870–1950) Jan Smuts, which stand at opposite ends of Government Ave. This one by Sydney Harpley is in front of the South African National Gallery.

When it was unveiled in 1964, a storm of protest resulted in a more traditional second statue by Ivan Mitford-Barberton beside the Slave Lodge.
